Protestors target bank, City Hall in Houston this morning – via Houston Chronicle

The demonstration was an outgrowth of a New York event focused on what the protesters called social and economic inequality and corporate greed. It began at 8:30 a.m at Market Square Park with about 150 protesters — many carrying placards and chanting — who then marched to the J.P. Morgan Chase Bank Tower before moving on to City Hall.

The crowd grew to more than 200 by midmorning, according to a police officer at the scene.

“We have officially occupied Hermann Square Park,” a speaker told the crowd, referring to the reflecting pool area on the east side of City Hall. “We are not going anywhere until the people are heard.”

The protesters were well prepared, with Houston Police Department escorts to block traffic, legal observers in fluorescent caps prepared to help if anything got out of line, and an Ustream channelbroadcasting the march for those who couldn’t make it in person.

The group marched first to theJ.P. Morgan Chase tower, directed by mounted police at every stop light and encouraged by honking downtown drivers. On the plaza outside of the skyscraper, the protesters yelled and complained about corporate greed, explaining instances in which it says the company spent dollars stolen from the people of the United States.

The dozen or so Chase employees sipping coffee outside of the glass doors didn’t seem phased by the hundreds of angry protesters.

AUSTIN – Cinco Ranch dug a first-half hole that proved to deep to climb out of as the Cougars fell to Austin Westlake 42-27 in the Class 5A Division I semifinals on Saturday at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

When choosing between a degree and going to work, paying rent, buying groceries or supporting family members, many students are forced to drop out, said Jean Johnson of Public Agenda, a nonpartisan public policy research firm that conducted a telephone survey of more than 600 people ages 22 to 30 for the report.

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. – All canned Slim Fast drinks are being voluntarily recalled by the company over fears of bacterial contamination that could cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. The recall affects all 10 million products currently on the market.

The products could possibly be contaminated with the microorganism Bacillus cereus. Unilever says the probability of serious health problems is remote, and the Food and Drug Administration says there have been no deaths or injuries associated with the recall.

An unknown number of people have gotten sick about six to 15 hours after consuming the diet drink, but have recovered within about 24 hours. Read the full story

Authorities are searching for three men suspected of robbing a bank in Fort Bend County earlier this week.

The robbery occurred at the Chase Bank branch in the 17200 block of FM 1093 about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Two suspects entered the bank brandishing handguns. One of them leaped over the counter, took a worker’s cellular phone and demanded money, authorities said. The worker handed over an undisclosed amount of cash. Read the full story

“Hey, it’s, uh, it’s Tiger. I need you to do me a huge favor. Um, can you please, uh, take your name off your phone. My wife went through my phone. And, uh, may be calling you. If you can, please take your name off that and, um, and what do you call it just have it as a number on the voice mail, just have it as your telephone number. That’s it, OK. You gotta do this for me. Defensive tackle Mike Mustafa (Katy, Texas/Morton Ranch) is one of several defensive line prospects in the Houston area in the 2011 class. The 6-foot-4, 300-pounder burst onto the scene as a big-bodied sophomore flashing his potential. As a junior, he battled through a broken hand and coaching turmoil at Morton Ranch, but continued to show his potential.

“It started off tough this season because of the coaches,” said Mustafa. “I broke my hand on the first day of practice, but I still played the first game. We had a lot of selfish players early on and didn’t come together until the eighth week of the season.” Read the full story
