When choosing between a degree and going to work, paying rent, buying groceries or supporting family members, many students are forced to drop out, said Jean Johnson of Public Agenda, a nonpartisan public policy research firm that conducted a telephone survey of more than 600 people ages 22 to 30 for the report.
The research reflects a “very, very different reality” than the common image most people have of college as “a place where a young person goes and they become an adult,” Johnson said. “So many of them are already assuming adult responsibilities.” Read the full story

2009 will go down as the beginning of the end of the United States drug war. I have worked at the Drug Policy Alliance promoting alternatives to the war on drugs for 10 years, and I can say without a doubt that there was more debate and movement toward sensible drug policies this year than in the last 9 years combined! ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. – All canned Slim Fast drinks are being voluntarily recalled by the company over fears of bacterial contamination that could cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. The recall affects all 10 million products currently on the market.
The products could possibly be contaminated with the microorganism Bacillus cereus. Unilever says the probability of serious health problems is remote, and the Food and Drug Administration says there have been no deaths or injuries associated with the recall.
An unknown number of people have gotten sick about six to 15 hours after consuming the diet drink, but have recovered within about 24 hours. Read the full story

Not since Prince Charles of Wales told then-mistress Camilla Parker-Bowles of his desire to be her feminine hygiene product has an adulterous celebrity been so humiliated by a telephone communiqué. We’re talking about Tiger Woods here, and the voice mail message he left to an alleged mistress, released earlier this week by Us Weekly. In review:
“Hey, it’s, uh, it’s Tiger. I need you to do me a huge favor. Um, can you please, uh, take your name off your phone. My wife went through my phone. And, uh, may be calling you. If you can, please take your name off that and, um, and what do you call it just have it as a number on the voice mail, just have it as your telephone number. That’s it, OK. You gotta do this for me. Huge. Quickly. All right. Bye.”

Can you imagine an America without a strong middle class? If you can, would it still be America as we know it?
Today, one in five Americans is unemployed, underemployed or just plain out of work. One in nine families can’t make the minimum payment on their credit cards. One in eight mortgages is in default or foreclosure. One in eight Americans is on food stamps. More than 120,000 families are filing for bankruptcy every month. The economic crisis has wiped more than $5 trillion from pensions and savings, has left family balance sheets upside down, and threatens to put ten million homeowners out on the street. The fire broke out shortly before 7:30pm at a two-story building on Brooks near Commons. The structure housed a grocery store and washateria on the first floor and neighbors tell us there were apartments on the second floor. Officials with HFD say burglar bars made an

y type of rescue difficult.
At this point, we don’t know what started the fire or how the three people, whose identifications are unknown, died. We have a crew on the scene and will have the very latest on Eyewitness News tonight at 10pm and here on abc13.com.

Texas officer abducted by ex-boyfriend freed
BROOKSHIRE, Texas — Authorities say a school district police officer in Texas who abducted his ex-girlfriend let her go her moments before committing suicide.
Investigators say 38-year-old Julio Reyes had abducted 24-year-old Rachel Hillsman on Tuesday morning in Brookshire, about 35 miles west of Houston. Hillsman is also an officer with the district and the mother of Reyes’ 13-month-old child.
Authorities say Reyes barricaded himself and Hillsman in a vacant house. Police searching the area found them Wednesday afternoon and a standoff ensued.
Authorities had been negotiating with Reyes for several hours when Hillsman was freed Wednesday night.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said Reyes shot himself as officers were taking Hillsman from the house.
