AUSTIN – Cinco Ranch dug a first-half hole that proved to deep to climb out of as the Cougars fell to Austin Westlake 42-27 in the Class 5A Division I semifinals on Saturday at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
The Chaparrals (13-2) advance to the Class 5A Division I championship game, where they’ll face Round Rock Stony Point or Euless Trinity at 2 p.m. next Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Things looked good for the Cougars right away as they picked up a turnover and a touchdown within the first 30 seconds. Senior linebacker James Radcliffe intercepted a tipped Tanner Price pass and returned it 29 yards to the Austin Westlake 6 on the Chaparrals’ first play from scrimmage. Two plays later, freshman running back Jamel James scored from 4 yards out to give Cinco Ranch a 7-0 lead just 27 seconds into the game.
Westlake then reeled off 28 unanswered points to close out the half and take a 28-7 lead at the midpoint.
The Cougars fought back, pulling to within one score at 35-27 after Bobby Waid caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zach Myers with 5:18 to go. Cinco Ranch had the ball and a chance to drive for the tying score but turned it over on downs at their own 33 with 2:02 left in the game.
