Ch. 11 (KHOU/CBS) news ran a story about this, and showed video footage of the way H.P.D. handled the situation. The story they ran with it (can be viewed here) showed neighbors speaking on the way Houston Police Department handled the situation. A bean bag gun and taser were used, but the man was not in any worse condition because of it…he was still yelling at police after the arrest. Training payed off for these officers…

Texas police subdue man with knife
Houston police have arrested a man who was walking around with two large knives.
It happened just after 1:00pm in the 3200 block of McGowan.
Officers surrounded the suspect, and K-9 units were called in. They shut down McGowen during the standoff that lasted several minutes.
Police say the man had threatened family members with the knives, and then threatened to kill himself.
“Then the patrol sergeant called the SWAT team,” said HPD Lt. AJ Mihalco. “We were trying to calm him down, negotiate with him, tell him to put down the knives, and he wouldn’t put them down. Our basic goal was to calm him down.”
When the K-9 unit arrived, the dogs apparently scared the suspect who took off running.
Police chased him across the street and into a backyard.
They tried to use a bean bag gun on him. When that didn’t work, officers tasered the suspect and put him in handcuffs.
They led him to a patrol car with his pants around his ankles.
Police said he was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Officers -and neighbours – were happy that the standoff ended without anyone being hurt.
“That’s all our training. We used all our training today and tried to calm him down,” said Mihalco. “We used our tasers, we used the dog, anything but deadly force. It’s the last thing we try to use is deadly force.”
All HPD cadets are now undergoing crisis intervention training.
