HOUSTON – When it comes to homework, let’s face it: Some kids are always phoning it in.
But in Katy ISD, that could be a good thing.
Cimarron Elementary’s fifth graders, all 136 of them, are learning to use their new smart phones.
Otherwise known, in Education-Speak, as “mobile learning devices.”
“For lessons in class,” their teacher instructed them, “instead of doing it on paper and pencil you’ll get a chance to do it in your device.”
Teachers will be able to “sync” homework assignments to the hand-held units, for students to complete when and where they wish. The devices have all the computing power and office applications of smart phones, but without the ability to make phone calls or send text messages.
“My parents said they wish they had it,” said student McKay Bloxham, “because it sounds like a really cool fun and easy way to learn.”
School administrators are seconding that emoticon.
“Any time you give a child a laptop or take them to the computer lab, learning just comes alive,” said Cimarron principal Mindy Dickerson.
She added Cimarron is the only school in the Houston area to be taking these smart phones for a test drive.
