Tiger Woods isn’t just America’s greatest golfer, and he isn’t just America’s greatest philanderer. He’s also America’s greatest vocabulary teacher.

Woods hasn’t yet spoken publicly in the two weeks since his mysterious car accident led to a media feeding frenzy about his sex life. But he has issued a couple of public statements on TigerWoods.com, and in those statements he showed a grasp of the English language that was apparently too difficult for some.

The latest statement on Woods’ web site is headlined, “Tiger Woods taking hiatus from golf,” and includes Woods saying, “I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused” and “I have decided to take an indefinite break.”

Sure enough, the Google Trends list of the most-searched terms of the day includes includes three words in the top 30 — “indefinite,” “hiatus” and “infidelity” — that are there as a result of Woods using them in the statement. This has happened before, as the last time Tiger spoke up, it left people wondering what “transgressions” means.

So kudos to Tiger Woods: He isn’t just giving Americans tabloid fodder, he’s giving Americans a vocabulary lesson.
